DIP2017: From ideas to possibilities (Primary Workshop) (TH/EN)

Having gained knowledge from the experts in various fields, Primary workshop team transformed their ideas into prototypes. The facilitators provided consultation to the teams, unleashing their potential to create solutions that address the imminent aging society in the coming future.

Designing space for interaction

According to the research and interviews of single people, the team found that single people are aware of their health, regularly exercise, in good health, and independent without relying on state welfare; but do rely on regular income. A home is always needed no matter how old they are. From teenagers, people grow into adulthood. In this context some may leave home to get married and come back to their parents after divorce. Others are single and stay with parents to provide care. The need for a place to live is always present. The target group is divided into 4 generations. A possible solution is to add more space to an existing house so the singles can live with their parents. The initial idea of designing a place for the singles turned into finding an empty space inside the house or the community that can accommodate a platform to create common areas where occupants interact.

Recommendation/ Tips

  • The key challenge for this team is to manage empty space to create a platform in a house. Houses in Thailand are usually designed to feature common areas where family members spend time together such as the open space under the house, the garden, and the kitchen. The platform for this project must address the balance between privacy and socialization, using existing common areas designed to enable interaction between family members in a different way.
  • An example from Japan was introduced. House Vision (http://house-vision.jp), a house platform, designed under the theme ‘CO-DIVIDUAL- Split and Connect/Separate and Come Together’, addresses several issues including communications, mobility, the aging society, energy, and the relationship between urban and rural.
